Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has expressed gratitude to Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi for his role in inspiring him during his early years at the club.
Saka, now a key player for both Arsenal and England, also acknowledged the positive influence of Jack Wilshere and Chuba Akpom, who, like Iwobi, graduated from Arsenal’s Hale End academy.
“When I was in the academy, all of us looked up to Alex Iwobi, Chuba Akpom, and Jack Wilshere,” Saka said. “They had come through the academy and were close to our age. We watched them play at the Emirates and dreamed of following in their footsteps.”
Saka fondly remembered the inspiration these players gave to him and his peers, as they showed that young players could break into Arsenal’s first team.
He also shared a special memory of receiving Chuba Akpom’s shirt after a game. “I was about 13 when I got Chuba’s shirt, and I was so happy. I even sent him a message on Instagram to thank him. It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.”
Arsenal will return to Premier League action on December 27, hosting Ipswich Town at the Emirates Stadium.
