Caleb Williams Couldn’t Help Himself after Loss to Vikings

When the Minnesota Vikings went to Chicago for a date with the Bears, one of the greatest advantages they had was playing against Caleb Williams. The reigning first-round pick has been a mixed bag this season. Some of that has been out of his control, but there is plenty he has left to be desired. After the defeat, he showed why there were questions about the matter between his ears.

Caleb Williams Couldn’t Help Himself after Loss to Vikings

It is far too early to make any assessments about Caleb Williams as an NFL quarterback. His team has been terrible, and the offense has looked rough. Matt Eberflus addressed that by firing his offensive coordinator, and the quarterback has taken strides forward since.

On Sunday against the Vikings, the former Trojan tossed the ball a whopping 47 times. He completed 32 of those passes and turned in 340 yards. He didn’t throw an interception, though a few balls certainly could have been. Williams also converted a pair of touchdowns. He also showed adept ability to escape pressure, and his 33 yards on six carries led the team.

After the game, though, despite Sam Darnold putting up arguably the best showing of his career, the Bears quarterback used his press conference time to slight Minnesota’s quarterback. In praising Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, he went out of his way to take a shot at Darnold.

While what he said may not have been factually incorrect, the reality is that it comes off as poor taste at best and downright stupid at worst. Williams clearly doesn’t realize he has yet to accomplish anything in this league. It’s a possibility that he never will (either know it or accomplish anything). Throwing shots at veterans that have no tie to you whatsoever is an ugly look.

In the NFL, there are rare occasions where players stick with one franchise for the entirety of their careers. Part of a cohesive locker room and winning is developing relationships. It’s great that Williams has attempted to take the alpha role, even dating back to college, but he does so while rubbing so many the wrong way.

I’m sure Williams is a bit jealous that he’s not playing for the Vikings with those weapons at his disposal. I’m sure he’s disappointed that he’s on his back multiple times every game. I’m sure he’s upset that his team is the only one in the division that is not worth giving two rips about. Maybe leave Sam Darnold out of it, though.
