England Women Manager, Sarina Wiegman is pleased to have “a very interesting, exciting group,” at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

England head into the tournament as defending champions but were drawn into a difficult Group D alongside Wiegman’s home country, Netherlands, who they face in their second group match on Wednesday 9 July at 6pm CET (5pm UK Time).

The Lionesses will kick off their title defence against France on Saturday 5 July in Zurich, Switzerland, which is where they will then host the Dutch four days later.

England’s final group match will take place against fellow home nation, Wales, on Sunday 13 July at 9pm CET (8pm UK Time) in St Gallen.

“I think we have a very interesting, exciting group,” reflected Wiegman following the draw which she compared to the Nations League groups in terms of difficulty.

“It’s a bit the same as the Nations League groups – it’s very tough. You just have to take it as it comes and be ready on 5 July. That’s how I approach it.”

Wiegman also spoke of her excitement for the Wales fixture knowing that there is a rivalry between the teams.

“There’ll be some rivalry in a nice when we go out on the pitch. I’m looking forward to that game.”

Despite suffering just two defeats this year, England have struggled for consistent winning form, but Wiegman iterated her belief in the squad going into a busy 2025 which sees them play Nations League group fixtures from February to June.

“I’m confident in these players. As we’ve seen, we have some very good, younger players coming in and having some playing minutes. Everyone goes to a tournament to win it and so do we. I’m confident in my team and excited about next summer.”

Switzerland are hosting the tournament and ticket sales are already strong within the host nation, which Wiegman feels is “massive” and underlines the sport’s progress.

“You can see with the amount of tickets already sold, it’s more than in England when we started, so you see improvements all the time.

“There are so many good countries, so for us, we’re working every day to get things right, to support players as well as possible to be selected and be in their best form.”
