Fines loom for Siraj and Head after pair cop code of conduct breach after Adelaide confrontation

Travis Head and Mohammed Siraj are both likely to cop fines for their heated confrontation during the Adelaide Test, after the pair were found guilty of breaching the ICC’s code of conduct.

A fired-up Siraj became public enemy number one in Adelaide after waving Head off when he bowled him to end a magnificent run-a-ball 140 midway through Day 2 of Australia’s 10-wicket win, with Head responding with a volley of verbals as he made his way off.

The pair have since opened up further on the incident, with Head saying he was ‘disappointed’ in both Siraj’s conduct and his own response, while the Indian quick claimed Head lied about the interaction in his press conference.

“When I got him bowled, I only celebrated and he abused me and you saw that on TV too,” Siraj told Star Sports India.

“I only celebrated at the start, I didn’t say anything to him.

“What he said in the press conference wasn’t right, it’s a lie that he only said ‘well bowled’ to me. It’s there for everyone to see that that’s not what he said to me.”

Match referee Ranjun Madugalle found both Head and Siraj guilty of the code of conduct breach, according to News Corp, following a hearing on Sunday night after the Test was completed.

They are set to cop either fines or reprimands due to their previously clean disciplinary records.

However, the Siraj send-off was not the only aspect of his game that has raised the ire of Australian greats, with former Test captain Michael Clarke taking issue with his habit of beginning to celebrate LBW dismissals instead of appealing to the umpire, often without resulting in a wicket.

“Siraj should be fined for keeping on appealing for LBWs and not asking the umpire,” Clarke said on the Big Sports Breakfast radio program.

“He hits the batter on the pads and just runs down like they’re out. I’m surprised the ICC haven’t fined him because I remember when I was playing, you get fined every time.

“Brett Lee was the worst at it and they told him ‘If you don’t turn around and ask the umpire, you’re going to be fined’. I’m more worried about that from Siraj than him and Travis Head.

“Siraj did it in the first Test as well. You’re okay to appeal for anything you want, but you’ve got to turn around and ask the umpire. I’m actually surprised he hasn’t been fined.

“Him giving Travis Head a send-off as well, more fool him. The guy just made 140 – give someone a send-off that makes five, not 140.”
