German remake of Israeli drama ‘Night Therapy’ in the works

EXCLUSIVE: Night Therapy, the Israeli drama series about a psychologist who see his patients at night, is in line for a German remake. SquareOne Productions is working on a German version of the series, which has proven popular on yes TV in Israel. SquareOne and yes Studios have previously collaborated on international versions of Your Honor, which has been remade in several territories.

The German-language version of Night Therapy marks the first international deal for the series. The drama follows Louie, an Arab-Israeli psychologist who is struggling to raise his family after the suicide of his Jewish-Israeli wife. He decides to shift his practice to receive patients at night. Flashback sequences reveal their stories.

The original version is produced by Eight Productions. It stars Yousef Sweid as Louie and featured Shira Haas (Captain America) as one of his patients.

The German Night Therapy is in development with as yet unnamed writers attached. Deadline understands conversations are already taking place with on-screen talent. It is understood that the adaptation will be based in Germany and Austria. Broadcast partners are not confirmed. SquareOne’s German-language remake of Your Honor, made with Mona Film, was for ARD in Germay and ORF in Austria respectively.

“SquareOne Productions has created brilliant and memorable adaptations of Your Honor, so I can think of no better or safer hands for our latest title. Night Therapy,” said Sharon Levi, Managing Director at yes Studios.

Addressing Night Therapy’s potential in international markets, she added: “The issues for which most people seek therapy are often rooted in family, relationships or career – so they are fully universal. We therefore have high hopes that this adaptation will be the first of many.”

SquareOne is part of the Vuelta Group. The prodco’s CEO and Vuelta Germany boss, Al Munteanu, said the conceit of an unconventional therapist moving his sessions to the night “creates a magical night-time universe as a counterpoint to daytime, offering new and surprising perspectives.”

Speaking about the German-language version he added: “The characters and episodic plots of the original are basically retained, but the language is infused with lightness, irony and wordplay. We have – without spilling the beans just yet – an amazing talent in this role. We feel this show has awards potential, for it is fresh, human and of our time.”

If Your Honor serves as a template, Levi’s hopes for more Night Therapy scripted format deals are well founded. Square One adapted the Your Honor in Germany and Austria, and with Federation for TF1 in France, and Indiana Productions for Italian pubcaster Rai.
