Phoebe Cates has lived out of the public eye for years, but her husband, Kevin Kline, is happy with their quiet life in New York City.
The couple got married in 1989 and share two children together, Greta and Owen Kline.
“If your marriage lasts more than six months, you’re already in the Guinness Book of World Records, if you’re a Hollywood marriage,” Kevin, 77, recently told Business Insider at the Disclaimer premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Currently, they live together in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, away from the Hollywood gaze. “That’s why you’ll see no Botox. These are my lips, what’s left of them,” he playfully said.
And the Academy Award winner had nothing but kind things to say about his wife, who marked her latest onscreen acting appearance in 2001’s The Anniversary Party.
“She’s got her head on her shoulders, unlike me. I usually have my head on her shoulders, too,” he told the outlet. “She’s a great wife, a great mother, great person, and she keeps me honest.”
“Except for in interviews,” Kevin joked.
Back when she starred in The Anniversary Party, Phoebe, now 61, hinted that she had no intention of returning to acting full time. Instead, she was loving life as a mom of two in the Big Apple and dished on her time at home with her family.
“Some people have trouble with that,” the Fast Times at Ridgemont High actress told Fox News in June 2001. “But I love it. I do it all. We have no help whatsoever except for a housekeeper who comes in and cleans because, let’s face it, I hate doing that. But I cook dinner every night, and we’re all there together.”
Owen and Greta were also part of the film with their parents and costars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Alan Cumming, John C. Reilly and Parker Posey. “I think it was a matter of ‘Phoebe doesn’t leave her kids, so if you want Phoebe, the kids have to be there too.’ They would have been on the set, so you might as well have them in the movie,” Kevin said at the time.
Despite their 16-year age gap, Phoebe and Kevin’s marriage was built to last.
“I was 40-ish, when I finally stopped obsessing about acting and thought it would be nice to have a life and actually got married,” the Sophie’s Choice actor told The Guardian in January 2014. “If I had married someone my own age, the possibility of progeny would have been very slim. I didn’t consciously say: ‘Hey, we could make babies; want to get married?’ It just happened that way.”
Kevin fully supported Phoebe when she decided to walk away from acting to focus on motherhood and opening up her Blue Tree boutique in NYC.
“That was one of the many things I loved about her,” the dad of two explained. “She loved acting while she was doing it, but she was not driven by it, as I had been.”
