Pearl Jam pauses Sydney show to pay tribute to two Australian teenage victims of the suspected Laos mass methanol poisoning


Pearl Jam has paid tribute to the Australian victims of the suspected Laos mass methanol poisoning.

The American rockers were performing in Sydney when frontman Eddie Vedder, 59, paused the show to call out the “senseless” tragedy and pay his respects to late teen Bianca Jones. According to the ABC, Thai police confirmed to the outlet her cause of death was methanol poisoning.

He also sent his well-wishes to Jones’ friend Holly Bowles, who is reportedly on life support in Bangkok, and said the band are thinking about the girls’ families amid the horrific time.

Jones, 19, died in Thailand after both girls were taken to separate hospitals in the country. They reportedly had been to a number of bars while on holiday before falling ill.

Calling the incident “senseless,” he began: “I guess their drinks were spiked… absolutely [inaudible] senseless.”

“The one young woman Bianca Jones, she’s passed, and her friend Holly Bowles is hanging in, and we wish her the best, and we are thinking about the parents.”

Jones’ family shared news of the Melbourne teen’s death, releasing a heartbreaking statement saying she was “surrounded by love”.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that our beloved daughter and sister, Bianca Jones, has passed away,” the statement to The Herald Sun read.

“She was surrounded by love, and we are comforted by the knowledge that her incredible spirit touched so many lives during her time with us.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support, love, and prayers we’ve received from across Australia.”

The family then asked for privacy in dealing with the death and their grief.

A total of five people have reportedly died following the suspected poisonings. It’s believed they drank methanol-laced drinks.
