Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has extended his stay with the club by signing a new two-year contract, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until 2027.
The deal puts an end to speculation about Guardiola’s future, as his previous contract was set to expire at the end of this season.
The contract extension comes at an important time for the club, with changes in leadership on the horizon. Long-time director of football Txiki Begiristain, who has worked closely with Guardiola, is set to leave. Hugo Viana, from Sporting CP, will take over the role.
Despite Begiristain’s departure raising questions about Guardiola’s future, the Spanish coach has decided to continue building his legacy at City.
Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak praised Guardiola’s dedication, stating:
“Pep’s drive for improvement and success is unmatched. His influence continues to shape our players, coaching staff, and the culture of Manchester City while raising the standards of English football.”
Since joining in 2016, Guardiola has transformed Manchester City into a dominant force, winning 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles. His crowning achievement came in 2023 when he led City to a historic treble, which included their first Champions League triumph.
Guardiola is now chasing even more records, including a potential fifth consecutive Premier League title this season.
By the end of his new deal, Guardiola will have spent 10 years with Manchester City, surpassing the combined seven years he managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Reflecting on his journey, Guardiola expressed his excitement about staying, saying:
“This is my ninth season here, and we’ve shared so many special moments. I feel a deep connection to this club, and I’m thrilled to stay for two more years.”
Guardiola’s contract extension is a warning to City’s competitors. With his unmatched tactical brilliance and hunger for success, the 53-year-old manager shows no signs of easing Manchester City’s dominance in English football.
For Guardiola, the journey continues, and so does his quest for greatness with Manchester City.
