Ruud van Nistelrooy appointed new Leicester City manager

Leicester City have appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new manager. The Dutchman takes over from Steve Cooper, who was sacked last weekend after managing just 12 Premier League games.

Van Nistelrooy, 48, has signed a contract that runs until June 2027.

“I’m proud and excited to join Leicester City,” he said. “Everyone I’ve spoken to about the club has shared positive stories about the quality of the people, the supporters, and the club’s impressive recent history. I’m looking forward to giving my best for the team.”

Leicester currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone. Van Nistelrooy’s first challenge will be an away match against Brentford on Saturday.

His appointment follows a brief stint as interim head coach at Manchester United, where he managed three wins and one draw, including victories over Leicester in the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

He will now take charge of a squad that includes Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Previously, Van Nistelrooy had a full-time managerial role at PSV Eindhoven, leading them to a second-place finish in the Eredivisie during the 2022-23 season.
