Samson Siasia Urges Austin Eguavoen to Step Down as Super Eagles Coach

Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has called on interim coach Austin Eguavoen to resign after leading Nigeria to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Eguavoen was appointed as the team’s interim coach by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the resignation of Finidi George. However, Siasia believes Eguavoen should focus on his main role as the Technical Director of the NFF.

Speaking in Abuja during a friendly football match honouring Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Siasia said:

“Eguavoen already has a job as the NFF Technical Director. He should step down as Super Eagles coach and concentrate on his main role. He can’t hold two positions at the same time; he needs to decide which one to keep.”

Under Eguavoen’s leadership, the Super Eagles secured their place at the 2025 AFCON, hoping to win their fourth title in Morocco. However, it is unclear if he will lead the team to the tournament, as the NFF has yet to offer him a permanent contract or announce their plans for the role.

Nigeria finished second in the last AFCON held in Côte d’Ivoire and will aim for another strong performance in Morocco
