Just one day after his team grossly mismanaged the clock when it had a chance to defeat the Detroit Lions, Matt Eberflus was fired as head coach of the Chicago Bears.
It was an abrupt move, but it may signal that the oft-maligned Bears organization is serious about consistently winning and building a sustainable culture.
There is already speculation about who may become the Bears’ next head coach, and Ben Johnson, who is currently the Lions’ offensive coordinator, is the top candidate, according to Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports.

Johnson is in his third year as Detroit’s offensive coordinator, and in that time, the team has gone from being an NFL laughingstock to becoming arguably the best in all of football.
Detroit ranks first in points and first downs, and the Lions have scored more than 40 points four times, with more than 50 points twice this season.
Chicago isn’t that much less talented than Detroit on offense, and in rookie Caleb Williams, the Bears have the most potential-laden young quarterback they have possessed in decades.
But all that talent didn’t add up under Eberflus, as they are now 4-8 and on a six-game losing streak.
During the skid, the Bears have failed to reach double figures in scoring twice, including a humiliating 19-3 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 10.
Thomas Brown, who was recently promoted to offensive coordinator, will now serve as Chicago’s head coach, and he is listed third on DeArdo’s list of candidates, behind Johnson and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
During the upcoming offseason, Chicago could serve as an interesting destination for a number of head coaching candidates.
