During The Golden Bachelorette‘s Men Tell All episode on Wednesday, November 6, Michael Stevens shared a health update with the men. The contestant revealed he was diagnosed with cancer before coming on the show.
When he found out his diagnosis, he was not sure he wanted to do the show anymore. But he said that his kids encouraged him to go through with the experience. “What could have been a really lousy, difficult year, was a great one,” he said.
“I am going to be fine,” he assured everyone in the crowd. “It was caught early, and I want to thank this terrific group of guys, and I want to thank Joan because I am grateful for that experience.”
Michael said he was particularly moved when the proceeds from the Chippendales group date went to Stand Up to Cancer. During the group date, many of the men expressed that they were grateful to be able to support the cause, as they had lost loved ones to cancer.
The show’s leading lady, Joan Vassos, lost her husband to pancreatic cancer in 2021 after 32 years of marriage.
“I feel like he maybe had a little hand in me actually getting here, honestly,” she told Entertainment Tonight in June 2024 of managing her grief after John’s death. “He told me right before he passed away, ‘You need to go out and find somebody else. You were the best wife in the world and I want you to be happy.’ He gave me this wonderful gift before he died, and he said go and do something, and so here I am.”
At the Men Tell all, host Jesse Palmer announced that ABC would be matching their donation to Stand Up to Cancer. Michael’s family was in the audience for support and he thanked everyone for making his experience on the show so special.
Michael was eliminated during week 2 of The Golden Bachelorette. “Well that happened… but I had a great time!” he wrote on Instagram after his elimination.
After sharing his cancer diagnosis on the Men Tell All, Michael received support from viewers online.
“How Brave To Share Your Diagnosis On The Golden Bachelorette Men Tell All. Grateful This Journey Allowed You Moments Of Laughter As You Are Treated For Cancer. Quiet Strength Always Prevails,” one person wrote underneath Michael’s most recent Instagram post.
“I hope Michael finds love #TheGoldenBachelorette,” another person wrote on X during the episode.
“The bonds you guys made during this adventure far outweighs the journey for love as true friendship is the greatest source of true love,” another person wrote.
Currently, Guy Gansert and Chock Chapple are the final two men left on the show competing for Joan’s heart. Fans will get to see who Joan ended up choosing in the season finale of The Golden Bachelorette on Wednesday, November 13.
