There were some familiar faces filling in for the weekday Today hosts on Thursday, December 26. All was going well until Vicky Nguyen got called out for her unconventional choice of footwear on the day after Christmas.
Vicky was joined by Laura Jarrett, Peter Alexander and Jacob Soboroff during the episode as fill-in cohosts. Things were going off without a hitch until Peter told Vicky to kick up her shoes for everyone at home to see.
He then pointed out that Vicky was wearing neon yellow “Christmas slippers” during the segment that stood out against her purple pantsuit. She began smiling and her costars were laughing at the comment.
“That’s a good look!” Peter told Vicky, to which she responded, “Oh no no. This is the day-after-Christmas mom-brain moment where I thought I had the shoes but didn’t have the shoes.”
Vicky thanked their director for cropping out her shoes for a majority of the broadcast. Obviously, Peter pointing them out to everyone foiled her plans to hide her footwear during the episode.
But she ultimately defended her decision about wearing the slippers on the show. “Listen, they’re very comfortable, I will say,” Vicky said. We would have to agree!
The NBC personality is a mom of three. She shares kids Emerson, Odessa, and Renley with husband Brian. And she wasn’t the only member of the Today crew to defend the slippers.
“We all want the cozy feel after Christmas, right?” Dylan Dreyer, who is also a mom of three, said later on during the episode. “We ate too much! We’re just tired!”
Laura also supported Vicky’s footwear choice, telling Peter, “You’re never getting out of the dog house for that one.”
Jacob also came to Vicky’s defense, calling out Peter for his “tank top,” saying “show us your tank top, Peter.” The comments were made all in good fun, as funny banter between the hosts is what makes Today so great!
After the segment aired, Vicky shared a clip of it on her Instagram account with a playful caption.
“That time @peteralexandertv outed me for rolling in slippers. Ya got me. This is normal Vicky in her natural habitat. Business on top, Uggs on bottom,” she captioned the post.
“Normal Vicky is the greatest Vicky!” one person commented on the post.
Of course this hasn’t been the only time that a wardrobe mishap has happened on Today. Folks might remember a moment on the show in 2017 when Savannah Guthrie reached her hand down her shirt in the middle of a Today broadcast when her microphone wasn’t cooperating.
“Right before we came on, my mic, which was right here, dropped down my shirt, and I knew I was supposed to read the intro, so I just made a decision to reach out and get it,” she explained.
“That timing was perfect. I see a meme in your future or a GIF,” Hoda Kotb said, causing Savannah to respond, “It was all very innocent!”
