Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show: Fans praise Barbara Palvin for response to ‘crazy’ question

This week, Barbara Palvin walked the runway of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as it returned after a six year hiatus.

While her hair and makeup was done backstage before the show, the Hungarian model, 31, was asked a question fans have since called “crazy” – and she has been praised for the way she handled it.

The question came about during an interview with Entertainment Tonight before the much-anticipated catwalk on Wednesday (Tuesday night in the United States).

“What’s the first thing you’re going to eat, what’s the first thing you want to indulge in?” Palvin was asked.

The model appeared unimpressed by the question but quickly gave a clever response.

“[During the 2018 show my husband] Dylan [Sprouse] got me Shake Shack [a US burger chain], but because I was really, like, not eating healthy,” Palvin explained implying that she had previously restricted her eating.

But Palvin says that’s not the case anymore, and took the opportunity to make a subtle dig at toxic diet culture.

“This time around I was listening to my body so whatever I wanted to eat I ate it,” she explained, adding, “And I look better than ever”.

Fans on TikTok were quick to express their disapproval of the question and praise Palvin for her response.

“That question??? In 2024???” one user exclaimed.

Another commented: “This question in 2024 is crazy, love how she answered.”

One TikToker was confused by the response in the comment section asking: “Wait can someone explain why that question is bad please”.

Another replied, “Cause it sounds like they’re assuming she had to starve herself to look a certain way. Just toxic diet culture.”

Yet another TikTok user took to the comment section to express her excitement about the changing tides.

“And this is how we know things are getting better.”

In 2019, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show was cancelled amid the show’s poor ratings and a slew of controversies. One of those controversies was a wide-reaching conversation about the brand’s perceived association with toxic diet culture.

The brand returned this week off the back of a promise that it will be much more inclusive.

This year’s show was produced by Sarah Sylvester, EVP of Marketing and Janie Schaffer, Chief Design Officer, who say it will reflect the transformation the brand has made over recent years.

“It will be bigger and better than everyone has seen before,” Schaffer told Women’s Wear Daily ahead of the show, explaining the new show is meant to be a “celebration of how amazing the fashion show was … but through the lens of Victoria’s Secret today, rather than the lens of Victoria’s Secret of old.”
