Southampton host Liverpool in a bottom vs top of Premier League contest. 

Victory would see Southampton stay rock-bottom but move to within two points of safety, whilst Liverpool will stay top irrespective of the result.

Team News

Flynn Downes is a doubt for Southampton after he missed their defeat at Wolves with a knee injury.

Aaron Ramsdale (finger) and Jan Bednarek (knee) are ruled out.

Will Smallbone (thigh), Gavin Bazunu and Ross Stewart (both Achilles) remain ruled out.

Liverpool will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold after he withdrew from international duty for England, due to a hamstring injury suffered in the Reds’ win over Aston Villa.

Alisson (hamstring), Diogo Jota (rib), Federico Chiesa (knock) and Harvey Elliott (foot) remain sidelined.

• Southampton are winless in their last five league meetings against Liverpool (D1, L4).
• Liverpool have lost one of their last five visits to Southampton (W4, D1, L1).
• Both teams have scored in four of their last five meetings at St Mary’s Stadium.
• Three of Southampton’s four league goals at home have been scored in the first half.
• Liverpool have kept clean sheets in three of their five domestic top-flight away games this season.

Prediction

Having largely dominated the attack at Wolves, Southampton were just wasteful in a game that they could of well won yet silly defensive errors cost them which is worrying coming into this difficult game where they must defend a lot resiliently.

Liverpool in-turn will be licking their faces with glee after seeing the Saints’ defensive display at Wolves, especially after their clinical home win over Villa so I am expecting Arne Slot’s Reds to dominate here given their quality on and off the ball.

Simply put it this way, I just can’t see Southampton getting anything here so it will be about minimising their losing margin, yet this is a chance for Liverpool to boost their goal difference.
