Her before His! White Ferns script history by winning ICC Women’s T20 World Cup
It has been Her story over His. The New Zealand women’s team went on to lift the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 as they beat South Africa by 32 runs. And with his win, the Kiwis created history. The New Zealand Women team became the first cricket team ever from their country to win the T20 World Cup.
In the Women’s version of the game, it has been Australia who have dominated over the years. The White Ferns became the fourth side, apart from England and West Indies to lift the coveted title. Interestingly, this was New Zealand Women’s third appearance in the final.
White Ferns Stand Tall
The White Ferns ended up as runners-up in 2009 and 2010, losing out to England and West Indies. But this time, in 2024, Sophie Devine and her side were determined to cross the finishing line, and they did it with style.
Batting first, the White Ferns went on to pile up a massive total on the board, 158 runs. This was also the second-highest runs scored in the finals of the T20 World Cup. And in reply, the Proteas Women could only manage 126 runs, thereby concerning defeat by 32 runs.
The Kiwi men too have previously featured in a T20 World Cup final. Back in 2021, the Black Caps were defeated in the finals by formidable foes Australia, which was New Zealand’s first appearance in the final in this shortest edition of the game.
